Barbara Price
born Vera Zbitnoff in 1910 at Mikado, Saskatchewan, Canada

Grandmother's ancestors belonged to a Russian religious sect called the Doukhobors.  In the late 1800's they were forced to flee Tsarist Russia because of persecution for the their religious beliefs. Like the Quakers who were also rejected the authority of the Church of England, the Doukhobors were pacifists who rejected the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church and instead believed every man was guided by a "light within." The Doukhobors mainly in southern Russia and Ukraine. In 1816, they were labeled heretics and forced into exile in Milky Waters region of southern Ukraine. Some were later exiled to Eastern Siberia and Georgia. During the 1890s, Russian author Leo Tolstoy became sympathetic to the Doukhobors with whom he became a kindred spirit.  Tolstoy used the proceeds of one of his books to help them immigrate to Canada. Grandmother was born in a Doukhobor settlement in Saskatchewan.  the family then moved with a group of Doukhobors who settled Grand Forks, British Columbia. After her father had a falling out with the sect leaders in British Columbia, he moved his family to California. At age 13, upon become a U.S. citizen, Vera changed her name to Barbara.  After marrying James Archibald Price, she became Barbara Price.  Grandmother lived in Gridley, California until her death in 1990.
